Buildcorp has commenced work to transform the iconic Bondi Pavilion, placing their best ‘heritage restoration’ team on the job.
On Friday 19 June Waverly Mayor, Paula Masselos officially announced Buildcorp as the awarded contractor for their significant Bondi Pavilion Restoration & Conservation Project.
Architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer developed the design to restore the building to its former glory with many enhancements informed by input from the local community. Restorations to the heritage-listed building will take around 18 months to complete and the site will be retained as a cultural and community hub for future generations with a major focus on sustainability.
Buildcorp will be drawing our heritage experience and restoration system to analyse, research and prototype heritage elements before reinstatement.
Other project solutions include a methodology to achieve a feature concrete courtyard, staging to maintain safe public access, enhanced community engagement and sustainability initiatives to achieve a 5 Star Green Star rating.
The restoration project will deliver:
- A revitalised atrium with feature concrete precast elements and glass
- A modern interpretation of the post-war Mediterranean architecture with the inclusion of precast colonnades to the internal courtyard
- Rejuvenation of Queen Elizabeth Drive (Promenade)
- Greater access via landscaping and ramps from Campbell Parade to Bondi Beach via the pavilion
- New and improved amenities on the northern side of the Pavilion, including a family change room
- Courtyard spaces will be landscaped and updated for multi-purpose
- Renovated community spaces, art gallery and theatre
- A ‘Bondi Story Room’ for a flexible social history exhibition space
- A community radio studio
- New tourist centre/box office to the north of the entrance foyer
- Renovated commercial spaces for hospitality and other services
- A new Indigenous public artwork
- A larger space for the Pottery Studio
