Sydney’s iconic Harbour-side restaurant, Quay, re-opened its doors on the 19 July 2018 after a 12-week transformation. The project was Buildcorp’s second restaurant fit-out for the Fink Group and its redesign was led by architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer.

The new-look Quay has been re-imagined as an organic space reflective of Chef Peter Gilmore’s nature inspired cuisine with an enhanced layout that maximises the views of Sydney Harbour. The new interior includes individual dining zones for a unique and intimate experience, a new state-of-the-art kitchen, as well as a luxe private dining area framing the Opera House.

Buildcorp delivered the 12-week program with special attention to the restaurant’s high-end finishes and overall organic design. The curved slatted ceiling was designed to work harmoniously with the curved elements of the floor finishes and joinery below. Detailed survey work and coordination was required to custom integrate all services into the curved ceiling.

Other unique nature-inspired finishes and materials include the stingray patterned divides, volcanic lava stone detailing glazed with a ‘cracked bark’ pattern and a series of blue carpet pools referencing the ocean.

Individual guest experience

To ensure the perfect ambience for each guest, test-fits were conducted with full-scale templates for lighting, joinery and furniture positioning. To enhance the personal dining experience, each table features independently controlled lighting which changes throughout the evening. Custom prototypes for this lighting was tested to ensure it achieved the desired result.

As well as Quay, Buildcorp is also delivering another significant project in The Rocks precinct. Logistical coordination with the range of different stakeholders around the Overseas Passenger Terminal has been essential for the successful delivery of both projects.
