Timber solution prescribed for Macquarie University project

Buildcorp’s structural timber solution is taking centre stage as the key feature of Macquarie University’s new Clinical Education Building.

The transparent-by-design four storey building, the vision of Architectus, presented the ideal opportunity to realise the potential of a prefabricated Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glulam structure. The timber product is growing in popularity for its sustainability credentials and ability to: enhance the design, fast track the program and minimise impact on the neighbouring buildings.

Along with the structure, timber finishes also feature throughout in the: large lecture theatre, state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces, feature stairway and breakout areas.

The project has cemented Buildcorp’s partnership with one of the world’s largest mass timber suppliers, Binderholz, a market leader in providing wood products sustainably for innovative construction solutions.

The benefits of the timber solution for this project include the following:

Striking sustainability

The building’s modern design features an abundant glass curtain wall façade to allow maximum light into the narrow site. To complement this, building materials had to be largely prefabricated and environmentally sustainable, making CLT and Glulam structure a viable alternative to more traditional materials.

Accelerated program

The use of prefabricated engineered timber has enabled the team to fast track the program down to just nine months, to be ready for students by Semester 1, 2020. Timber will arrive to site already cut and shaped into panels to be erected.

Protect thy neighbours

The narrow site location poses additional challenge as it sits tightly between the Macquarie University Hospital and the commercial building 75 Talavera Road. The use of timber will reduce the impact of construction on these important neighbours, negating the need for noisy works such as concrete pours and jack hammering. The prefabrication of the timber also allows for a smoother program and coordination of deliveries with minimal conflict.

Buildcorp is excited to partner with Macquarie University, Architectus, Arup and Johnstaff to deliver this milestone project.
