Four Seasons Hotel, Sydney

Facelift for 5-star hotel in historic Circular Quay

The Four Seasons Hotel has been a feature on the Sydney Harbour skyline for close to four decades. With the façade requiring a refresh to enable the structure to continue taking pride of price amongst the signature buildings in the area, Buildcorp was appointed to deliver a full package of concrete repairs and façade refurbishment.

The scope of works involved concrete repairs to the exposed aggregate finish of the façade panels with a team of up to thirty specialists working from mast climbers erected around the building. The complex saw-tooth façade profile required a custom made access system to enable sufficient access for Buildcorp to carry out the works.

Staged for minimum impact

Extensive experience working in live-environments enabled the team to compose a detailed delivery program in partnership with the Four Seasons Hotel and other stakeholders to ensure the most efficient staging program was adopted. This involved the off-hire of entire floors of the hotel, coordinated and delivered on time to ensure the impact of noisy and disruptive works was minimised and planned in advance, allowing the hotel management team to coordinate their room letting schedule.

As an additional safety initiative, the team installed a wireless weather station on the hotel roof to monitor for any unsafe wind conditions that would affect workers on the mast climbers. This weather station also enabled the team to monitor for humidity and air pressure to determine the best timing for the ‘optimal environment’ to apply mortars, adhesives, sealants and primers. When the weather conditions weren’t ideal, the program was modified to ensure that the materials and remedial works were not compromised in terms of their appearance or performance
