Macquarie Group 1 Martin Place

The refurbishment of Macquarie Bank’s No.1 Martin Place offices aimed to transform the workspace into a collaboration and innovation hub, centred around a striking inter-connecting feature staircase built within a new 8mx8m void penetration over seven floors. Whilst Macquarie Bank remained on the premises with swing floors and staged handovers, Buildcorp carried out the works to create on each floor a 64sqm void throughout the existing building fabric. Several structural post tension beams and a large portion of concrete slab had to be removed.

The 5 Star Westin Hotel shares a common wall with Macquarie’s No.1 Martin Place premises and Buildcorp successfully penetrated the void only two metres away from the adjacent shared-wall. Out-of-hours works were not an option as they are peak times for hotel occupation. Through the Early Contractor Involvement phase Buildcorp executed extensive acoustic and vibration tests prior to commencement on site, resulting in minimal impact on hotel guests and Macquarie staff who fully occupied the building during construction.

The new workspace is designed to foster wellbeing, innovation and collaboration, and WELL inspired features were included throughout to have positive impact on the health and wellbeing of staff and clients. The building’s services were upgraded to increase fresh air supply; acoustics were enhanced using specialist materials (such as Buildcorp’s Europanel) to minimise acoustic reverberation; and the lighting system was overhauled to maximise daylight and reduce glare. Other inclusions were multimedia news screens, café, staff kitchens specifically focusing on foods informed by nutritionists.
