University of Technology Sydney (UTS) corrosion control & heritage works

Buildcorp’s Asset Solutions team were appointed to undertake remedial and refurbishment works of a pedestrian footbridge and the Bon Marche Building (CBO3), Peter Johnson Building (CB06) and The Terraces (CB18) at UTS’ Ultimo campus.

CB03 & CB18 scope of works

The project team undertook extensive repairs to the heritage awning structure of building blocks CB03 and CB18 along Harris Street and George Street. This involved the installation of strengthening steelwork into the awning frame and the remediation of asbestos soffit lining.

CB06 and pedestrian footbridge scope of works

Elements of building CB06 were suffering from corrosion. The project team treated the corrosion to the steel sun shade structures and to the steel pedestrian footbridge across Harris Street.

Project highlights

A key component of this project for the team was the replacement of the prominent 10 metre timber flagpole. This required collaboration from the project team with the manufacturer in South Australia for the successful supply and delivery of the new flagpole.

Due to the site’s location along busy Harris Street and George Street, much of the remedial and refurbishment works were performed during night shifts. Coordination with RMS and the local authorities was critical for this project and entailed Buildcorp undertaking negotiations for staged road closures necessary to perform the works.

The project team were proud to partner with UTS to deliver this technically challenging project and extend the life of a number of key assets across their Ultimo campus.
