Buildcorp Leadership Masterclass with Rear Admiral Lee Goddard CSC

“Leadership isn’t what you achieve, but how you achieve it” – Rear Admiral Lee Goddard CSC

Last week, we welcomed several of our own leaders, together with our project partners for the return of the Buildcorp Leadership Masterclass.

Hosted within the Great Room at the award-winning W Sydneyone of several key spaces delivered by our team last year – we were honoured to welcome Rear Admiral Lee Goddard CSC, CEO of the Australian Missile Corporation for an engaging conversation with Buildcorp’s Principal, Josephine Sukkar AM.

Drawing on his 34 years’ experience as a leader in the Royal Australian Navy, Lee shared valuable key insights on developing a high-performing team, navigating leadership in high pressure situations, and the key leadership qualities he has refined throughout his transition into corporate life.

Some of his most valuable takeaways that our people and their guests can apply in their personal and professional development include:

  • Leadership isn’t what you achieve, but how you achieve it
  • 5 things you need for a high performing team:
    1. Be linked by a common higher purpose
    2. Good process in place first to drive good principles and good behaviours
    3. Good communication – over communication is betting that under communicating
    4. High level of trust – know each other well
    5. Role clarity – the right people doing the right things at the right time
  • The traits of leadership:
    1. Leadership – being a leader by turning up every day and being prepared to lead the way
    2. Be a good manager first
    3. Be a mentor every day to those in your team
    4. Followership – by showing people how to follow:
      1. Demonstrate how you follow
      2. Show them how to follow
      3. Active followership – give your people an opportunity to have a say and participate in every conversation where practical
    5. Give your people what they need, not what they want
    6. Always be an example and lead by example

Thank you to our valued guests for joining us on the day.
