Queensland Academy of Sport

Partnering to create facilities for our future World Champions

As part of its High Performance Sport Strategy, the QAS aims to deliver enhanced services to a wider range of high performance programs and athletes. For the Sleeman Sports Complex (SSC), this initially involves introducing a QAS presence to the SSC to directly support athletes and programs located on that site.

Consisting of two work areas inside the existing Chandler Theatre and in the Anna Meares Velodrome (AMV), the project involved the conversion of existing spaces as per below:

  • Chandler Theatre – conversion of existing badminton courts and storage areas into a high-performance gym, amenities and associated facilities including physio and outdoor courtyard space.
  • AMV – office fit-out for QAS and new bathroom facility. Additional works included new badminton courts (to replace those removed from Chandler Theatre) and a new external awning above existing glazing.

The project was completed in three (3) phases across both the areas, with a preliminary phase encompassing both locations. An important consideration for the works was the Sleeman Aquatic Centre’s operational requirements throughout the refurbishment period. The Theatre and AMV are regularly used facilities all year round and the works methodology needed to take this into consideration.
