The transformation of QUT’s International Students’ hub from an outdated 1980s building to a modern working, teaching and learning space.

The 3-staged transformation of QUT’s International College ‘P Block’ at Kelvin Grove has brought to life levels 2, 3 and 4.

Works included structural demolition of existing walls to provide open plan spaces and new external windows, construction of new concrete stairs into the foyer area, services upgrades, bathroom refurbishments, kitchen fit-outs, office space fit-out, and installation of a “feature tree” in the centre of the foyer – an architectural interpretation of a Queensland Bottle tree.

With a collaborative culture established with all stakeholders from day one, the project ran seamlessly whilst navigating challenges of COVID-19. The reduced number of staff and students allowed for the fast-track and concurrent delivery of stages 2 and 3, ensuring no impact to the original completion date.

Being in a restricted position on campus with surrounding buildings, adjacent footbridge overhead and a 60m sloping pathway to the closest road, careful planning and consultation was undertaken with the university to establish pedestrian diversions and safe accessways for all deliveries to the site.

Isolated vertical transport was also established for workers and materials to minimise impact to staff and student access to the building. This temporary hoist was constructed on the exterior of the building which required removal of windows and external structure to maximise access.

Testimonials

I can honestly say that it has been one of the highlights of my career to work with such a wonderful group of people, and to see now what we have produced together as a team. For me, it is not only what we have accomplished, but how we have accomplished it that I will take away from our time working together.  The dedication, persistence, skill, hard work, and professionalism that the Buildcorp team have brought to the project has been outstanding.  Without each of your input as individuals, the way we have come together as a team wouldn’t have been possible, and for that I can’t thank you all enough.

Sam Dryhurst, Senior Project Manager, Capital Works | Queensland University of Technology

We have recently completed a complex, staged project, in a live university building at QUT International College with Buildcorp as the Principal Contractor.

The Buildcorp team were considerate of the client noise restrictions and accepted the after hours works requirements so as not to affect the clients general business.

Buildcorp delivered a quality project to program which allowed staged handover and use of the completed areas by the client in accordance with the agreed timeframes.

The team was most professional and were quick to propose alternatives to assist with design solutions and variations options.

We are yet to have any other contractor score 100% in a WH &S audit review until now and this was achieved by Buildcorp after one such audit. The site was always clean and tidy which contributed to a safe site.

It was a pleasure working with the Buildcorp team and we hope to do so again as and when the opportunity to do so arises.
