Landlocked in one of Australia’s busiest health campuses, Buildcorp developed a considered methodology and range of innovative solutions for the St Vincent’s Private Hospital (SVPH) Redevelopment to maintain full operations, regulatory compliance and patient care.
In response to increasing demand, St Vincent’s Healthcare aimed to refurbish and expand the existing hospital facilities and infrastructure, whilst always maintaining capacity.
To support with this endeavour, Buildcorp applied a range of innovative solutions to separate works from hospital operations, including a system of protected patient tunnels connecting the Private and Public hospital buildings. In addition, a prefabrication solution for the existing building’s new facade ‘pods’ was aided by an offsite factory, saving months from the program. As well as this, methodologies for managing noise, vibration, and infection control ensured there was minimal impact on the hospital’s services.
The implementation of these solutions in a fully operational health campus required strategic and holistic stakeholder management. To achieve this, Buildcorp completed a thorough review of the construction methodology with key stakeholders, including senior hospital management staff and department heads. This resulted in the safe and successful delivery of the SVPH Redevelopment, with limited impact to ongoing operations and patient care, which was separated into two stages.
Stage 1 comprised the construction of a new 14 storey wing located in a tightly bound site between the Aikenhead building, Sister Bernice wing and the existing SVPH ward block. The building accommodates two new theatres, 48 new inpatient beds, cafeteria, rehabilitation gym, hydrotherapy pool, consulting suites, and an ambulatory care area. A new lift core to the north corner of the new wing was created, providing new fire escape stairs, a large clinical lift, and three additional passenger lifts.
Stage 2 included the refurbishment of the existing SVPH ward block on levels four to ten, to improve and expand patient accommodation. This included a new central sterile services department (CSSD) adjacent to the existing operating facilities, and a new operating theatre with recovery bays for the Day Surgery Unit.
