At the time of construction in 1966, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth was Australia’s largest international hotel. Almost 60 years earlier, Sydney’s oldest hotel underwent significant live refurbishment works to bring the hotel into a new era of luxury.
With its distinctive horse shoe design and curved copper façade, the hotel held major social and architectural significance in Sydney – having hosted Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, the Pope and Neil Armstrong in its day. The repositioning of the heritage-listed building aimed to reinstate the asset as the premier lifestyle business hotel within Sydney CBD.
Following an extensive Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process, and a completed early works package, Buildcorp was engaged to carry out the upgrades of the hotel guest rooms and suites. In addition, works included the refurbishment of existing public corridors and lift lobbies on each of the 11 floors.
The staged refurbishment of the existing 436 rooms required delicate coordination whilst the hotel continued to operate.
